The Journey of Compliance

Integrated Governance Framework

Associazione Italiana Giuristi d’Impresa (AIGI), the Italian Association of Company Lawyers, member of ECLA (European Company Lawyers Association), will host the 8th edition of the Summer School at the medieval village of Bertinoro (Forlì – Cesena) – Italy.
The Summer School will provide participants with the opportunity to explore the evolution of compliance as part of a broader governance structure, focusing on how legal departments can effectively contribute to corporate strategy, organizational design, and sustainable business growth.
The 2026 edition builds on previous sessions, expanding on key topics, offering updated knowledge and practices, and providing a comprehensive view of compliance and governance considering recent geopolitical and energy challenges, as well as rapid technological innovation.

The program is addressed to in-house counsels, heads of legal departments and general counsels, who are interested in strengthening their role within corporate governance frameworks, developing their ability to operate across functions, and positioning the legal department as a key enabler of business strategy and integrity.
As the audience is composed exclusively of in-house counsel, participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with peers facing similar challenges and share perspectives, approaches, and best practices in a highly interactive environment.
Course materials will be provided in English, while lessons will be conducted in Italian, unless international participants or speakers are present. A good command of English is therefore recommended.

The AIGI Summer School is a unique opportunity to deepen participants’ understanding of integrated compliance systems and their role within modern organizations, with a focus on how governance and legal functions drive compliance, support strategy and improve organizational effectiveness.
Participants will gain practical insights into how to embed compliance into business processes, support decision-making at the executive and board level, and boost the credibility and impact of the legal function within their organization. At the same time, the AIGI Summer School offers an opportunity to meet colleagues and speakers in an informal context that facilitates networking and to enjoy some free time through social activities.

The course will explore the transformation of compliance from a control function into a strategic governance tool, addressing key topics such as organizational models, regulatory frameworks, ESG and value chain responsibility, geopolitical and cross-border dynamics, and the implications of technological innovation for legal and compliance functions. A key focus will be placed on the evolving role of the in-house lawyer as a strategic advisor and governance architect, capable of bridging legal expertise and business needs, and of supporting organizations in increasingly complex and regulated environments. The lessons will combine focused lectures with practical case studies, designed to bridge theory and practice. Participants will be guided to translate the concepts discussed into actionable strategies that can be immediately applied within their organizations, maximizing the strategic impact of the legal function. The program will be held by experienced senior in-house counsels and by high standing attorneys and academic speakers with strong professional expertise in the relevant fields, offering a pragmatic, business-oriented perspective grounded in real-life experience. The variety of speakers will ensure a multidisciplinary approach, enriching the learning experience.

The 2026 Summer School follows the previous sessions that investigated some of the topics included this year, shares updated knowledge and practices and tends to provide an overall view of compliance and governance topics and tools in the light of the changes required by the challenges offered by the most recent geopolitical and energetic crisis as well as the fast technology innovation.
